What is the best sewing machine to purchase to stitch words onto shirts and hoodys?

you didn't say how big you want the letters and words. are you planning on doing this commercially? most home embroidery machines will void the warranty if you use it commercially. i've used the janome, pfaff, viking and brother embroidery machines. i personally prefer the brother line. i still haven't read completely thru the manual. it is really easy to use. my machine is a ult2002d and i have heard that the new brother self threading is tricky to learn to use. i've heard good things about the brother se270d that walmart sells for $350 is a good machine. if i remember right it comes with a 5" x 7" hoop. since you basically want the machine for lettering i would suggest purchasing a hoop-it-all for your machine. www.hoopitall.com it will give you a much larger embroidery area without having to re-hoop. i will also say i haven't really heard anything good about the singer embroidery machine. there are many yahoo groups for machine embroidery. some are machine specific. you may want to search yahoo groups for the specific brand of machine you are looking at and see what the people on the yahoo groups think of their machines.

here are a couple of embroidery websites i would like to share with you.
http://www.astitchahalf.com/ puts 5 different fonts on sale each week for $3 for all 5 sets.
http://www.designsbysick.com/amember/go.php?r=5647&i=l0">Designs by SiCK Embroidery Library has many fun fonts. they have 49 free designs per day and the membership fee to all the designs on their site is very reasonable.

good luck and if i can be of further assistance please feel free to e-mail me from my profile.

I am looking to buy an embroidery machine. All I want to do is monogramming, like on ribbon. Do I really need to buy an expensive machine or can I get away with something under $500.00. And if I really don't need an expensive machine, what machine would you recommend. Thank you

it depends on how large you need the monograms to be. i have a kenmore (made by janome) that isn't even an embroidery machine but will do small (probably about 1/4 inch) lettering. if you do need an embroidery machine you could go with just a 4X4 embroidery field. i perfer brother machines for embroidery. walmart sells one that is a basic embriodery machine. it will have a couple of fonts with it. i haven't really checked it out because i have a brother ult2002D. i have been watching some of the prices on e-bay lately and you may want to consider a used machine. here is a great site for embroidery designs. they give away 49 free designs a day. they also give away a free font ocassionally if you joing their yahoo group.

Hello! I Need some help. My girlfriend's mom has a Brother PE 700 II machine. Which of these programs like Wilcom ES, Tajima DGML or Melco Design Studio are compatible with that machine? Or, does the PE Design the only one that work ? Thanks.

You can actually use any software that you like, personally I use Fancy Works Studio. What you will need is PED-Basic. The PED-Basic will allow the designs to be put on a memory card to be used with the machine. Personally if i were going to invest in another software program it would be embird. www.embird.com you can try it before you buy it and with the add ons you can purchase seperately it is wonderful for anything you would want to do. it really depends on what your girlfriends mom wants to do with the software. if she just wants to get designs from the internet to her machine and maybe resize or change the design a little that can be done with PED-Basic. PED=Basic can be found on e-bay for about $100.00.
if you have any other questions please feel free to e-mail me.

I've heard of a few alternatives to embroidery stabilizer… dryer sheets, freezer paper, even "sewer cloth" that plumbers use. Any others?

i would recommend you join a few yahoo groups. they discuss things like this all the time. some of the alternatives work and work well, other work and can damage your machine. the people on the yahoo groups are full of so much useful knowledge and they allow us to learn from their mistakes.
here are just a few. if you want more either do a search in yahoo groups or contact me thru my profile and i'd be happy to help.

I have saved a design on a USB stick. When I try to open it on my machine, nothing comes up. Please let me know all the info you can! Thanks in advance.
It comes up on my computer fine, when I put the USB stick in. But when I put the USB stick in my Janome 350E embroidery machine, it does not show the design.

i haven't worked with a janome machine for several years but do you a brother. the janome will use either a jef or sew file. what is the file extension of the file you are trying to use. i belong to many yahoo embroidery groups. here are a few of them. if you join a couple i'm sure someone on there will take you by the hand. the people on these groups are great and so helpful.

I bought the USB flash drive and when I download files off the internet, it says it can't work (or something.) Is there a step I'm missing in order to get my machine to recognize the files?

what is the extension on the file? most embroidery designs are in zip format when you download them. the file format you need is either sew or jef, i'm not sure because i haven't worked with a janome machine for awhile. you need to unzip the file before you use it. here are a few embroidery groups i belong to. the people on them are great and you will get so much information from them.

I am doing a complex design and can't seem to find which color thread that correspond with the numbers my embroidery machine is giving me even though I have looked through the manual and read. I will read it again. Model is Brother SE 270D. Meanwhile, Any ideas?

there is a computer program specifically for cross matching thread numbers. right now the site Designs by SiCK Embroidery Library
is running a good sale and doing a group buy for the program. go take a look it's a great program if you want to use specific colors.

good luck,

I have a Brothers embroidery machine, and im trying to figure out how to digitize images. I have no idea where to start, which program do i need? where do i get it from? Is there a easy to read manual for digitizing? im not experienced, any help will be great!

digitizing takes alot of work to learn. there are many yahoo groups devoted to machine embroidery. embird is a very good program and many people use it. they do give you a 30 free trial period so you can try it before you buy it. the site is www.embird.com
i have the pe-design version 4 which is the software specifically for the brother machine. it is expensive but will do alot. i also have fancyworks studio by pantograms. i really wish i would have upgraded my embird instead of purchasing fancyworks.
i would sugest joining some yahoo groups about machine embroidery and reading there before you purchase the software.
do you have a way to transfer embroidery designs from the internet to your machine? the ped-basic is an inexpensive program that will let you use designs you purchase or get free from the internet.

i wanted to share a couple of my favorite sites with you.

I just bought an embroidery and I figured out how to write a word with the 4 printed fonts but I cannot figure out how to center it onto my fabric? It says to use embroidery sheets. Do I need to use that and what is that?

Also, for the cursive feature on #45-70, is there a way to type in the word on the machine or do I have to eyeball that with each letter? Does the cursive section only have one size?

Lastly, if I'm trying to find a free ballet, hawaiian or a different letter font on the internet to download, do you have an easy way to find it?

i have a brother machine but it is a ult2002d so i can't specifically answer your question. there are soooooo many yahoo groups dedicated to machine embroidery. i looked up a couple of the for you and there are 2 that are just for your machine. the people on these groups are wonderful and will walk you thru every step of the way. here are the links.
