Does anyone recommend the SE-270DBSC Brother® Disney Computerized Sewing & Embroidery Machine?

November 14th, 2011 7 comments

I’ve been sewing for 7 years but have never done embroidery. If someone has this machine, do you recommend it? Can I download free embroidery on a Macintosh and use it with this machine?

My wife and I bought this machine and found it relatively easy to learn. Neither one of us had ever embroidered or done much sewing before. The machine is, I feel, a really good starting point for someone wanting to get into the hobby or business. We had the machine for only a couple of months before we decided to upgrade. We are a small home-based start up embroidery business; thus the reason for upgrading. Having gone up a level and a half or so to a Brother Pacesetter 8200 there are some things we miss about the 270D and some things we don’t. The 270D makes threading needles simple. The 8200 requires a tad bit more work (I do mean only a tad) to thread and is not as easy as the 270D; where once you get the thread situated in the thread cartridge you just insert it into the machine. So from that stand point the 270 is easier. That being said, having upgraded, I can honestly say, if we had known the difference in quality of the embroidery produced, we would have gone with a "higher" end machine from the start. The 270 produces good embroidery, but the difference of quality it is capable of and that of the 8200 floored us (270 had some looping and gaps in the designs while the 8200 did not). Same design, same thread. 8200 won hands down. So what am I trying to say here? If you don’t want to shell out the dough, the 270 is perfect. If you can get your hands on an upgrade for a couple of hundred bucks more (varies), I’d go with a model a step or two above. My two cents. Hope it helps.

How do I find sources for machine embroidery designs from other countries?

prefer free downloads

Dover Clip art series of books & CD-ROMs. They are Royalty Free. You might need to work on the clip art in a Graphics Program to get it ready for autodigitizing. The black & white Dover CD ROM clip art works best since their color clipart has too many dithered colors. Dover has the biggest collection of clipart for embroidery & foreign art.

The Dover Books (without CDs) are inexpensive. You could scan them.

Free Downloads sometimes are Roayalty Free. Check to see if you can resell the digitized designs from the free downloads. Upon going on these graphic free sites, just be careful of POPUPs. Sometimes they also give your PC pests– Depends on the sites.

I have a free site from Australia that I heard about from Stitches, an Australian Sewing Magazine from www.ericas.com. "LaceFairy" has free clip art that is for non-commercial use. Maybe from that site you can find some others.

It is the big Graphic sites that the POPUPs & adware are problems. The Lacefairy site seemed ok.

Does any one have website for FREE machine embroidery designs? I want to play a bit before I get serious.?

I have a new embroidery machine and am just learning. I don’t want to purchase designs until I know I can do them.

there are soooooooo many free embroidery designs out there that i doubt anyone can list all the sites. many digitizers give a sample of their work away to encourage you to purchase their designs. i’m going to list a couple of my favorites but all you have to do is a search for machine embroidery designs, i’m not sure i have ever found a site that doesn’t give away at least one freebie.

this digitizer is awesome. each week she puts 10 of her collections on sale for $3 each. she was one of the first. she also has free designs on some of her pages.
http://www.astitchahalf.com/

one of my favorite sites gives away 49 free designs a day and the membership to their site is very reasonable and well worth the money.

and here is a yahoo group you might want to join. they post where free designs are

good luck and have fun.

my mum has an embroidery machine, i have a design i want, but do not want to submit it to a site so they can sell it. i am looking for preferably free software where i can create it myself.
thanks in advance..
or, even a site that will do it for you but give you a percentage of their profits on the design..
yes, she has the card reader on the computer so she can transfer files to the machine.
i have an image that i have created that i want to use, but do not have any software to convert it over to the right file type..
i have found sites where you can submit your image to them and they would format it for you for free, but in doing so, you give them all of the rights to the image..

www.embird.com will let you try before you buy. does your mum have a way to get the design from the computer to the machine? my favorite site for designs is Designs by SiCK Embroidery Library
you might want to take a look.
any other questions just e-mail me.

Where can i find free embroidery designs on the internet?

October 14th, 2011 1 comment

Preferably pes. Thanks a lot.

There are many listed on the Internet and they all come in pes. http://search.aol.com/aol/search?invocationType=tb50-ie-aol-newtab-en-us&query=free+machine+embroidery+designs

Make sure that you download is within the hoop size your machine accepts.

If you should find a design that you really love, but is not pes, there is a free software download that you can use to convert the file to pes. Pulse Ambassador is the software. How to use PA – http://www.annthegran.com/cs/forums/p/4745/17969.aspx

The only exception would be Bernina’s .art format which you may not be able converted.

How to Buy Art & Craft Books

September 23rd, 2011 No comments

Wanting to try a new hobby? Or just needing to expand your library, Halfvalue is a great place to get Supplies and Instruction books you will need. Just like anything else in life, practice makes perfect and most artist are not born with the “know how” to get started. So look for Art & Craft Instruction Books. They can be the jumping off point for a new hobby or even for making money.
When looking for Art or Craft Instruction books, you must determine which media you want to try or use. There are Oil Paintings, Watercolors, Pastels, Acrylics, Quilting, Sewing, Decopage, Embroidery, Cross Stitch, Drawing, Pen and Ink, Pattern Books, You also will want to also look for books that have great pictures to help you “see” what you will be doing and to use as a comparison guide.
There have been thousands of books and booklets written for this purpose. Which ever media and type books you decide to try, always remember to read the description the buyer places in his/her listings. If you need more information email a message to the seller and ask specific questions. If you don’t get an answer you may want to reconsider bidding on that particular book. Please give the seller time to respond, (we are not online every minute of every day). Also watch feedback. Sometimes bad communication is the cause for negative feedback and the seller is not really at fault, sometimes it is. The higher feedback the chances are you will have no problems. Sellers listings should tell you what payments they accept and where they will ship. Another thing to remember as a buyer, always check the shipping. International prices for shipping can be high, and I am sorry to say I have seen sellers charge high rates for shipping to cover looses on the item. ALWAYS check BEFORE bidding.
A last important thing when buying books to remember, make sure the condition of the book is fine for your use. Sometimes with old or used books, pages yellow, or get loose. Check the description to see that the books are in useable shape. I also have bought a book that looked like it came through a flood and was described as good shape. Most sellers are honestly trying to describe items clearly. But some ones “good shape” is someone else “poor” or even someone else “excellent”. Ask before bidding any and all questions and at least with enough time allowed for seller to respond.
If you buy from a seller and enjoy the experience place that person in your Favorite Seller’s to make searching esier, and faster for you. I have a lot of repeat customers and so do other sellers and we all love repeat buyers. Sellers and customers a like are looking for someone they can trust and increase the pleasure of “Halfvalueing”. Search the sellers feedback to see if they constantly place these type of books, or email and ask them.
Some art and craft books are one time listings. You may never see that particular book again so bid if it is a price, and type book you want. Art and craft books are wonderful presents for those loved ones that you never know what to get for.

I’m going to do an embroidery for my niece, how’s this design?

September 7th, 2011 2 comments

I’m going to be doing a embroidery on my nieces pants (on the pocket) but I’m torn between this one:

http://www.singerco.com/library//Design/840_kittyLove.jpg

and this one:

http://www.singerco.com/library//Design/917_kitten_lg.jpg

Oh and in case it matters she’s six (and loves cats) and the pants I’ll be putting it on are black.

i would go with the 1st one for various reasons –
it will stand out more on the black background;
it’s simpler & quicker. remember, your niece is just 6 & will soon outgrow the pants.
it has greater kid-appeal.

i would, however, keep the 2nd pattern [just loved it!] for something more lasting, something she will not outgrow – may be a wrap, a scarf, a hug cushion, pillow cover, etc……

hope this helped
all the very best & have fun ;-))
