I need to buy a sewing machine for art based work but it needs all the usual functions too, I’m quite experienced on the machine but there is so much choice out there I’m getting a little confused what is the best and value for money

Please hep!

Thanks

I would go to a sewing machine dealer and demo the embroidery machines. I have a Viking Rose, which is an old embroidery machine. It works great and I have never had any problems with it. You will get free lessons on how to use the machine you do buy. Viking, Pfaff and Bernina would be my top 3 brands

Any machine can do free motion embroidery. If your library happens to have a copy of "Singer Instructions for Art Embroidery and Lacework", take a look at what was done almost a century ago on a treadle machine.

When you go shopping, ask for a demonstration of bobbin work with decorative threads and flosses. http://www.threadsmagazine.com/item/5025/bobbin-work-when-threads-are-too-thick-for-the-needle
There is some value in having a standard bobbin case (as opposed to a drop in bobbin) if you’re doing much bobbin work… you can have one case set up for standard sewing, and the second for messing around with. A second bobbin case will probably run you about $20-80, depending on the machine.

Here’s my standard sewing machine advice for beginners: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100120140429AApYwiY

(Oh, and some free eye candy for you — no embroidery: http://www.fashion-incubator.com/archive/pattern-puzzle-bonkuk-koo/ and some modern machine embroidery with an unmodified straight stitcher:
