I was lucky, I had my Grandma and my Mother standing over me "teaching" me, but doing more criticism and sighing than teaching.
Basics: if you can learn how to knot the thread, bring it up through the fabric, manage the embroidery hoop, and tie off your thread you are home free. The stitches are easy.

My Mom bought me the Reader’s Digest Complete Guide to Needlework, it is a good book, lots of stitches, good directions. I used it once for a embroidery kit that the instructions for a stitch that was unclear in the kit directions. The book solved the problem. I was embroidering an owl, feathers and all, on a pillow for Mom. It looks real.
The book is still available online, I forget which ordering site I looked, and it was not high priced.

I recommend starting with a printed cross stitch project, pillow cases are a good thing to start with. That is what Rivers started on, then I learned lazy daisy and a running stitch, so there were more pillow cases in my future. I still have the first ones I made, they are not too bad looking, if I do say so myself!

Really, if Rivers can survive the way she was taught, and still like to embroider, it might be fine for you to learn online and out of a book.
Martha Stewart, Craft town and e-how, among others, say they have how to embroider directions, though Martha says she is embellishing crafts. Just type in embroidery how to for a list of sites to look up.

And while you are at it, learn how to bead! It is easy to learn, an you can make stunning things with it! Use it with the embroidery for Xmas, or wedding crafts, I just did some doll clothes that were beaded.. Rivers did an under the sea sweatshirt for my Mom when that was in style. It was really pretty. A friend made herself a tote bag with starburst beading. Very pretty, she did a pro job on the bag and the beading.

youtube!! in the search box enter "hand embroidery" and be conscious of spelling when you enter it. There are dozens of vids of how to do the various stitches.

there are also some very good books available. check first at the library to see what they have available to loan, then when you locate the book that has the clearest instructions to you, then you can go to the bookstore or the internet book sales and order it if you like.

Also, you can get any number of beginners kits at the hobby and crafts stores and do them according to the instructions. These come with printed cloth, embroidery floss, needle and easy instruction sheet(s)
