What embroidery machine do i need?
I want an embroidery machine. I just want it to monogram towels or things like that for cute gifts. I want one with some cute fonts on it. I have never done it before so it needs to be easy to work. I also cant spend over $400-$500 on it. Help!
The problem with picking up a Brother embroidery machine from WalMart is you can’t just take it out of the box and start embroidering.
It is really something you need lessons for. There is special thread, bobbin thread, and needles you need. You need to know how to hoop and what stabilizer to use and how to use it. I took one class in just stabilizers. Towels for example, need a special stabilizer on the top. It looks like a think plastic. It pushes downt the loops of the terrycloth so they don’t poke through the threads of your design.
Getting a used model at a sewing machine dealer would give you free lessons on how to operate your machine. And offer other lessons on how to embroider

The Brother at Walmart will do just fine. The machine does the work. You just need the supplies:
Cut away stabilizer
Tear away stabilizer
Water soluble stabilizer
Embroidery thread
Embroidery bobbin thread
You will get extra bobbins, needles, scissors and few tools with the machine.
Walmart may have the thread, but you need to go to JoAnn Fabrics for the stabilizer.
Read the manual and always thread the machine with the presser foot up.
Be sure the bobbin thread is feeding from the bobbin in the correct direction and through all the guides.
Test every design with the same fabric, thread and stabilizer and you plan to use for your project.

Use Brother PE 150 (from Walmart) and BabyLock Ellegante embroidery machines and have not taken one lesson.
I bought my first Embroidery Machine at Walmart and I knew absolutely nothing about machine embroidery. Now I help others learn.
I never took lessons. I bought a book entitled "Machine Embroidery Essentials: How to Stabilize, Hoop and Stitch Decorative Designs".
You do need to buy a few supplies. The Walmart stores that still sell thread will have a few basic colors of embroidery thread and bobbin thread.
They did have stabilizer by the yard, but you may have to go to a fabric store for the stabilizer.
You will need water soluble stabilizer to top the towels before stitching. That you will also have to purchase at a fabric store.
Always test the designs on the same fabric and with the same stabilizer so you do not ruin your project. This helps you determine if the stabilizer is right and if the design is right for the fabric you are going to use.
Always read the manual, raise the presser foot before threading and make sure the bobbin thread is feeding correctly from the bobbin.
Stitch out some of the built-in designs on scraps of fabric to get the feel for the machine.

I just got a Singer Futura C-200. (Jan. 09) It was a little higher than you mentioned ($599) but it will interface with my laptop. I had never done embroidery but have been sewing for quite some time and also have extensive computer experience. I love it!!! The C-200 comes with the auto digitizing software which helps create your own designs, but only 2 fonts. There are hundreds of fonts out there to purchase and download. Which I haven’t done yet, but plan on soon!
