Embroidery machine?
I am looking to buy an embroidery machine. All I want to do is monogramming, like on ribbon. Do I really need to buy an expensive machine or can I get away with something under $500.00. And if I really don’t need an expensive machine, what machine would you recommend. Thank you
it depends on how large you need the monograms to be. i have a kenmore (made by janome) that isn’t even an embroidery machine but will do small (probably about 1/4 inch) lettering. if you do need an embroidery machine you could go with just a 4X4 embroidery field. i perfer brother machines for embroidery. walmart sells one that is a basic embriodery machine. it will have a couple of fonts with it. i haven’t really checked it out because i have a brother ult2002D. i have been watching some of the prices on e-bay lately and you may want to consider a used machine. here is a great site for embroidery designs. they give away 49 free designs a day. they also give away a free font ocassionally if you joing their yahoo group.

If you only want to put letters on a ribbon and don’t care if you only have one or maybe two fonts, there are several sewing machines that do simple monogramming.
You don’t need an embroidery machine for that.
Where the embroidery machine starts to make sense is if you don’t want to have to change thread colors frequently…

i have had an embroidery sewing machine for about 10 years.
I just purchased a Baby Lock Intrigue off of EBay. It’s absolutely wonderful. It was under your $500 price mark. It has 5 different fonts programmed in, decorative stitches, buttonholes and a host of other features. I like that model because I can remove the embroidery attachment, and use it as a "regular" machine.
It really all depends on what you want to do. With pretty much any machine that has a zig zag stitch you can set the stitch length to 0 and use that as a "satin stitch" and free hand embroider (hoping that your feed dogs will not give you too much problem). In my opinion, a $500 machine will have a bunch of "bells and whistles" that you may never use, once again depending on what type of sewing you are doing. I would do some serious research before spending that amount of money on something that you may not get to use as much as you would like.
Good Luck, and have fun.

allbrands.com-great site, great prices.
I don’t think there is a machine on the market that will allow you to do only monogramming unless it is free hand embroidery on a standard sewing machine. Go to http://www.dekatzenembroidery.co.za. They have a tips page including info on what to look for in an embroidery machine depending on your price range and what you want to do.

Machine embroidery is addicting (ask anyone who has ever owned one), once a person sees what one of these machines can do they are generally out buying bigger, better machines so if you don’t want to be smitten by the machine embroidery bug, I would suggest you stick with the monogramming on a regular sewing machine.
Everything that has to do with machine embroidery is expensive, it cannot possibly become an inexpensive hobby even after you’ve paid for the machine. I think you’d have to sew and sell a whole bunch of monogrammed ribbon to ever make buying one just for that reason worth it. Using the machine for a hobby that is fun or to sell embroidered products is what makes it worth buying one for. Of course this is just my own opinion but buying one for just sewing on ribbon would be a huge waste of a wonderful piece of equipment, kind of like buying a new car so you can just sit in it and listen to the radio and not drive it…only not ‘that’ expensive. lol
