    I was thinking the oval shape would be a great base for either a placemat design or for an area rug… but how large should the center chain stitch be? You mentioned that for a purse it was 70 chains. Is there a good ratio to go by? Such as, for every inch of the finished product, you would chain X amount stitches? Let me know.

    I would say that if you make extra long loops so that they are secure on the hat, it should work. I have not tried it so I do not know for sure at this point.
