How can I turn an illustration into a digital image?

November 21st, 2012 3 comments

I want to turn an illustration into a digital image in order to get it embroidered onto something. I asked about it at Lids and they have a service where they digitize the image for $50. I would like to find something free or cheaper. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

once you have drawing on paper done, use scanner to import to image editor or use camera to upload image , then touch up or re-edit image to inaccurate copy of design you want,

Does any one have any experience with the new Singer CE-350 embroidery sewing machine?

November 19th, 2012 1 comment

If so how easy is it to thread, adjust, understand. Do you like the machine and is the embroidery that it does sufficient?

The Singer CE-350 is not available yet and honestly there is not enough difference between the CE-350 and CE-250. The only difference is the color the faceplate and the software it comes with. The machine itself is the same as the Ce-250 it just comes with editing software which is not a necessity, because the CE-250 already comes with AutoPunch. The Editing Software can be purchase separately right now so you can have basically a Ce-350 it is just green. As for the machine itself, I feel it is a great machine for any beginner or inexperienced embroiderer. I have the Brother Innovis 4000D so I know there are a lot of difference when there is a huge price difference. The Singer CE-150, CE-250 and CE-350 are twice as fast as the CE-100 and CE-200. You used to be able to count the stitches now you can not. They improved the software and gave the machine a sleeker look. They did a nice job. As for threading, It is a little tricky at first because you have to make sure you floss it in the tension assembly but aside from that it is fairly straight forward. The embroidery that comes out of the machine is pretty good I think.. Of course the Brother Innovis 4000D is going to have better stitch quality and go faster but the CE machines do a surprisingly nice job. The best deal I saw for the Singer CE-250 is Mr. Vac and Mrs. Sew. That is where I got mine because they have a wonderful add on package you can get with it (I think it retail for like $500 or Something) for only $99. They had a nice fast delivery and a charged No Tax (Because I am in NJ) and Free Shipping. I hope all this information helps. Here is a link to the Singer CE-250:

What kind of software does a computerised embroidery machine use?

November 17th, 2012 2 comments

I was watching this video on youtube where a woman is using a sewing machine and it is connect to her laptop and she is able to design her cloth with her computer. The one thing that I would like to know is what kind of software does she use to design her work. Can somebody please help?

What she is using in Wilcom and it is very expensive.

Here is another brand that has the basics and is free – http://www.swfeast.com/en/free_digiziting_software.asp

If you find this is what you want to do, you can upgrade to more expensive products.

What is the best software to create silk screen prints?

November 15th, 2012 1 comment

Im looking to start printing my own T-shirts, can anyone please tell me what the best software is to make the stencils as well as any other useful advise to help make the process easier. Thanks

As a former screen printing company owner and designer, I can tell you the industry standard is CorelDraw. The color separation and basic CAD technologies that were adapted early on are still universal today. Walk in to any screen print, embroidery, ad specialties, sign or vinyl banner shop with a CorelDraw .cdr file and you’re good to go.

The downside is that CorelDraw is the least desired vector app by professional designers because it is imprecise, the colors are dull and not quite right, and lots of other flaws. For screen printing, any vector drawing program would probably do, even Inkscape, which is free. If you use heat transfers, any design app will do. Paintshop Pro is a good one for hobbyists. Photoshop Elements is better but a little more expensive, but Paintshop Pro is owned by Corel, so is CorelDraw friendly.

Be advised that screen printing is expensive, labor intensive and has a high spoilage rate. Designing, preparation and clean up for screen printing a dozen t-shirts takes hours. The actual printing takes only a few minutes.

As a beginner, because of ink smudges, leaks and other printing mistakes, you might have to print a couple dozen shirts just to get 7 or 8 acceptable ones. If you are not planning on doing this as a profession, or eventually printing dozens or hundreds of something, heat transfer is a better alternative. Not iron-on, although you could start with that to see if you like doing it, but heat transfers applied with a professional heat press machine as is done by cafepress.com or zazzle.com or any local Kinkos or quick print shop.

Oh…and the stencil process? It is not created or applied with software. The stencil material either comes in sheets that you cut and apply to the screen, or is painted on. When the stencil material is dry, you will have to expose your art transparency to some kind of intense light source. Then the screen is washed out with warm water. Any areas blocked by your art will wash out and create the stencil that you will squeegee ink over that makes the final print.

Best of luck.

What is the best machine for quilting and embroidery? freemotion work?

November 13th, 2012 9 comments

would like to know what machine would allow me to do free motion work: a quilting machine or embroidery machine? and what make model and year is the easiest to use with the most space also sews different directions besides forward and reverse.
i see that a singer 15-91 can be used for freemotion work?
has anyone used this machine for that or embroidery?
is there a machine that will do both ?

A Bernina 730E … Sews in 16 different directions. Includes the BSR (stitch regulator) for even stitches (straight or zig zag) when doing free motion. Beautiful embroidery and applique. Huge variety of built-in stitches, up to 9mm wide. Truly, a Dream Machine! Wish I could afford one … I have a 440 QEE model, it has the BSR but only straight stitch. I also have the embroidery unit (optional) but have to use it attached to my laptop. The 630, 640 and 730 have the embriodery software built in to the machine. The 440 is still wonderful to sew and quilt on. Nothing sews like a Bernina! (The only premium European brand still made in Switzerland by the original family-owned company. Viking and Pfaff are now owned by Singer and made in Asia.)

Could anyone tell me where I can find the conversion chart for threadRus embroidery thread at?

November 11th, 2012 2 comments

I need the conversion chart for this embroidery thread. I have looked everywhere on the internet and there has got to be one somewhere.

I did a llot of looking

If you are not able to find what you are looking for with our free online thread conversion tool please feel free to try out the My Thread Box software which offers you different levels of accuracy in matching threads from over 70 different thread manufactures. Another option is a free download the thread converter pro for free which converts between 14 thread manufacturers. We also have many other embroidery software packages available from digitizing to lettering.
This site show a lot of manufactures but none with your brand.

http://needlepointers.com/ShowArticles.aspx?NavID=1707

This link has a lot of charts but you will have to click on the picture to find the one you need. When you get to the bottom of the first page look just below it to see more and that will continue until they have no more pages to go to

http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?_adv_prop=image&va=conversion+chart+for+thread+embroidery+thread

This may be the last of the conversions and I hop you can find it in there otherwise please enter threadRus into your search and see if this or the paper work wrapping you floss gives the name of the manufacturer.

I do wish I could have been of more help……..Sorry

Is it easy to learn how to use an embroidery machine?

November 9th, 2012 2 comments

I would like to invest in an embroidery machine because I have really good ideas on what to use it for. However, I have never used one. In fact I barely know how to use a sewing machine.
I am clueless on how an embroidery machine even works. I want to use it to do different fonts, number designs, polka dots, and things of that nature. Can anyone maybe give me the basics I need to know? Perhaps direct me to a website? Thanks.

An embroidery machine is very easy to use. Easier than learning to use a sewing machine.

You can teach yourself to do this buy reading and testing the different designs. I did and it is quick and easy to learn.

This was my first book – http://books.google.com/books?id=j6e847_n3MUC&dq=embroidery+machine+essentials&printsec=frontcover&source=bn&hl=en&ei=gH4ESu2GD5WstgfxluCKBw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4#PPP1,M1

Embroidery machines have built-in fonts and a few designs.

To expand on what comes already built-in you will need to be able to transfer machine embroidery designs from your PC to the machine. Most designs are downloaded from the Internet – you can find many that are free.

The less expensive machines require additional software (reader box and rewritable card for machine embroidery). This software is around $200.

The Brother sold at Walmart would be a good machine to start with and you can get the additional software (mentioned above) for $119, here – http://www.allbrands.com/products/abp01060-0165.html

Several years ago, I bought my first embroidery machine at Walmart and the reader/card software at Allbrands.

You will also need machine embroidery thread, machine embroidery bobbin thread and stabilizer – all sold in fabric stores. Watch for sales and stock up on staple/favorite colors of thread. There will be extra needles & bobbins with the machine.

I get a lot of my machine embroidery supplies here – http://www.shoppersrule.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=sr
