Have a Brother embroidery machine… how do I choose and use software to make unique designs to embroider?

November 14th, 2011 5 comments

My husband bought me a used Brother embroidery machine. I am new to the WHOLE sewing/embroidery thing, and have tons to learn. I wanted to know if there is free software out there that will allow me to design new things to embroider? How do I go about making these things on the software and then getting it to the machine?? I’m totally confused with all this and incredibly overwhelmed! 🙁 I want to have fun!

also, I have windows vista…. does that make things harder?
also, how do i take all these free designs I see on the web, and open them once they are saved in files…. what program do I use to open .art files?? I have tried everything! Help!

There may not be free software to download to create your own designs. Vista is ok to have when purchasing your digitizing software. Brother have some easy to use programs, such as PED Lite and PE Design. But you dont have to buy ‘Brother’ software.
.art designs are Bernina files, and unfortunately, you cannot use them unless you have bernina branded software. Stick to downloading designs in .pes format. Embroidery is so much fun, and there is always something to do!!! I use husqvarna viking software and i find this really easy, and it does a lot! and i use this with my brother embroidery machine.
Digitizing is the process in which you get your image into ‘stitch points’, basically telling the needle where to go, and what direction and form the stitch needs to be. Its not easy, but if you love art, and love the computer- you’ll love this!
Ask your husband if the shop/place he bought it from offers lessons, or classes on the software and machine. i’m sure they can give you tons of advice! Happy Sewing!!!!!!!

Does anyone recommend the SE-270DBSC Brother® Disney Computerized Sewing & Embroidery Machine?

November 14th, 2011 7 comments

I’ve been sewing for 7 years but have never done embroidery. If someone has this machine, do you recommend it? Can I download free embroidery on a Macintosh and use it with this machine?

My wife and I bought this machine and found it relatively easy to learn. Neither one of us had ever embroidered or done much sewing before. The machine is, I feel, a really good starting point for someone wanting to get into the hobby or business. We had the machine for only a couple of months before we decided to upgrade. We are a small home-based start up embroidery business; thus the reason for upgrading. Having gone up a level and a half or so to a Brother Pacesetter 8200 there are some things we miss about the 270D and some things we don’t. The 270D makes threading needles simple. The 8200 requires a tad bit more work (I do mean only a tad) to thread and is not as easy as the 270D; where once you get the thread situated in the thread cartridge you just insert it into the machine. So from that stand point the 270 is easier. That being said, having upgraded, I can honestly say, if we had known the difference in quality of the embroidery produced, we would have gone with a "higher" end machine from the start. The 270 produces good embroidery, but the difference of quality it is capable of and that of the 8200 floored us (270 had some looping and gaps in the designs while the 8200 did not). Same design, same thread. 8200 won hands down. So what am I trying to say here? If you don’t want to shell out the dough, the 270 is perfect. If you can get your hands on an upgrade for a couple of hundred bucks more (varies), I’d go with a model a step or two above. My two cents. Hope it helps.

Looking for embroidery monogramming fonts…?

November 14th, 2011 4 comments

I want to embroider some fingertip towels with the initial "J" on them, but can’t seem to find a font that would look good free off the internet. Anyone have some to share for free? I am also looking for some fun ones for initial "M" or a first name and a fun border…something for diaper covers and little outfits for my baby girl.
The sewforum.com link is great! That is the kind of response help I am looking for! I know there are freebies out there…just need some help finding them 🙂

My new problem…these are .pes files, which my embroidery machine is compatible…I just can’t view them on my computer. Any suggestions on why I can’t view them, or what I need to do so?

I found these in the wedding fonts and thought you might like the flower letter for your daughter

How do I find sources for machine embroidery designs from other countries?

prefer free downloads

Dover Clip art series of books & CD-ROMs. They are Royalty Free. You might need to work on the clip art in a Graphics Program to get it ready for autodigitizing. The black & white Dover CD ROM clip art works best since their color clipart has too many dithered colors. Dover has the biggest collection of clipart for embroidery & foreign art.

The Dover Books (without CDs) are inexpensive. You could scan them.

Free Downloads sometimes are Roayalty Free. Check to see if you can resell the digitized designs from the free downloads. Upon going on these graphic free sites, just be careful of POPUPs. Sometimes they also give your PC pests– Depends on the sites.

I have a free site from Australia that I heard about from Stitches, an Australian Sewing Magazine from www.ericas.com. "LaceFairy" has free clip art that is for non-commercial use. Maybe from that site you can find some others.

It is the big Graphic sites that the POPUPs & adware are problems. The Lacefairy site seemed ok.

A while back I had a series of dreams so vivid I still remember, Any ideas of what they meant?

November 14th, 2011 2 comments

Okay there were 4 dreams I distinctly remember.. all had a ton of detail so I’ll only mention 2 for now.. What do you think they could mean?

Vampire bear.. I was in a run down house with clothes and old furniture and garbage all around. I was with two men who were hunters and they were hunting bears in the house. The bears were upstairs and kept coming down. One small bear came down and then ran back up but then another bear came and it was big and for some reason it wanted me. It kept trying to sneak up on me and get me, and the men were using me as bait to attract it. I kept using a chair to block it from getting me and I was trying to convince the guys to get out of there. But they wanted to get that one bear.. it kept coming up and smelling me and it was just disturbing because in the dream I felt there was something wrong with that particular bear. So finally I convinced the guys to leave, we left and went up to this cabin that had a bunch of people there and we all sat around and were talking and having a few drinks. I was sitting at this kind of bar, but it was just an island like in a kitchen. I could see from outside myself and was seeing myself sitting there.. when all of a sudden the big bear stood up behind me and turned into a vampire, it grabbed my head and bit my neck. Then broke my neck and turned back into a bear.. this guy grabbed me and was freaking out because I was half dead and flopping around in his arms then the bear grabbed my hand and bit off my fingers and ate them.. It was intense because I could feel it and see it happening to me..

Sacrificial rite.. In this dream I was part of some religious group, I was raised in it but didn’t believe it. We were preparing for a ritual where young girls were sacrificed and I was angry because the richer members paid to keep their daughters from being chosen for sacrifice. We had been chosen unfairly, there was I think 7 girls to be sacrificed. We had to prepare by choosing what we were to wear. There were robes either green or white with gold embroidery, and sashes the same but you wore the contrasting colour. There were staffs like shepherds crooks all embossed with gold swirls and a paisley types design but not quite. Then there were these white cloth things that you put over your hair underneath the robes hood. In the dream I had a plan to stop this sacrifice once and for all. I decided to volunteer to be first and I hid a big knife(one I really have) under my robe. There was a man that hypnotized you with a gold watch and then a priest who would slit your throat. So I went on the platform and he started trying to hypnotize me but I just pretended, then when he thought I was out of it I took out my knife and attacked both of them. Everyone in the church started freaking out and I chased them all out and cut them down if they were in my way. I felt justified I felt free I felt sick at the pain I was causing, even though I was using the flat of the blade on most ppl. But in the dream I knew it was right because it saved us. The weird part of the dream was the feeling that I was always like that, that I always challenged things, that it was my nature to fight against things I did not agree with and to rebel.

The bears represent situations or people at the time that were a threat to you, were actually hurting you, were acting like destructive vampires to you. The hunters were supposed to be people who were helping you, but it turns out the help was using you, and you got hurt.

The religious thing is about all those areas of life like, religion, politicans, parents, teachers, corporations who all want you to sacrifice yourself for their cause or product. It is about your fight for individuality against the forces of conformity and control. You are successful in your battles.
