What are the leading embroidery sewing machines?

October 28th, 2012 4 comments

Large embroidery design area, Help with color, user friendly, used with PC or Mac, Economical, up to date and not likely to be outdated soon. Easily available technical support.

Bernina’s top-of-the-line embroidery/sewing machine, the Embroidery/Sewing Machine Artista 730E, is one of those few "best that money can buy" models. With all that any embroidery-sewing hobbyist could possibly want and maybe more, the Artista 730E requires a sizeable investment. Fortunately, the size of the investment is highly negotiable. With a list price of $7999, the actual cost of this sewing machine can vary greatly from region to region and dealer to dealer. For this reason many home sewers start small and gradually trade up to this Cadillac of models. A wise consumer will shop all the dealers in their area, selecting one with appealing pricing as well as a supportive staff.

Since learning to use all of this machine’s features can take years, you’ll want to have a dealer who can help you every step of the way. While many machines provide excellent sewing or embroidery options, the Artista 730E offers the best of both worlds. This model is for you if you are looking for one of the finest computerized sewing machines available, paired with some of the most versatile and complete embroidery options on the market. Embroidery customization on this sewing machine is incredibly versatile. Designs and alphabets can be rescaled with stitch count changes on screen. Or, for a more familiar format and complex design alterations, plug your PC into the Artista 730E and make your changes on the large screen. Using both computer and sewing machine, you can make these changes with the included Editor Lite software. A design stick is also included for easy loading, transporting and saving of designs.

The primary design storage system of the Artista 730E is what sets it apart from machines by other manufacturers. While some manufacturers use primarily CD-Rom for design storage, Bernina relies heavily on embroidery memory cards. A built-in card slot accepts Bernina and OESD design collection cards into the machine. As an alternative, a CD- Rom drive may be purchased for using designs from other manufacturers. One particularly desirable sewing feature on this machine is the Bernina Stitch Regulator (BSR). It makes free motion sewing far easier to learn, by automatically regulating stitch length for both straight and zigzag stitching. This technique is particularly useful for those who enjoy quilting and can be used in place of the stippling stitch feature offered by other manufacturers.

An extensive menu of over 855 stitches is packed into this sewing machine together with 10 buttonholes and 31 quilting stitches. A very wide stitch width setting of 9 mm also serves to set this model apart from others. As amazing as this machine is, we would recommend you test it and the few others that are available in this price range. The decision should be based on how you sew and what is important to you, versus what machine is truly "best." In shopping for a machine of this quality, the best choice is the embroidery-sewing machine that meets the most of your needs and is offered by the dealer best prepared to help you learn to use it.

what would you need to do to put an image and lettering on to fabric to embroidery over later.?

May 17th, 2012 2 comments

I have been asked to transfer and embroidery by hand an image and some lettering on to work uniform of a cousin of mine, this is the first attend at embroidery and actually getting the image of what she wants and the adding the extra words of her workplace is stressing me out, has any one any really simple put affective ways of achieving this project, I have a simple sewing machine and have also have been looking up how to free embroidery by machine, I have the wooden hoop, and nothing else, i.e. water water-soluble stabilizer or pencils etc.. I also have no idea how to place the design on her work tunics and tops. Please help a complete novice. Any tips or ideas would really be appreciated.

If this is your first embroidery project, then tell your cousin to find a professional embroidery shop and have it done. Beginners can very rarely make professional looking embroidery by hand… it takes months and years before you get to the point that you can do lettering in a professional manner, for instance. Lettering by free motion embroidery is almost as difficult.

And in the meantime, practice. But not on someone’s uniform.

Best book I know of on free motion machine embroidery: Fanning and Fannig: http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Book-Machine-Embroidery-Creative/dp/0801976480 Hand embroidery is a much broader subject: I’d probably start you with one of Erica Wilson’s books, and then move you to Royal School of Needlework Embroidery Techniques by Saunders, Butcher and Barret.

In answer to your question: how would I do the transfer? I’d either use a heat transfer pencil, a perforated stencil and chalk, direct drawing with a soft lead pencil, or basting. Depends on the substrate being embroidered.

Have an embroidery machine, want info on how to put my own ideas onto garments?

January 13th, 2012 3 comments

The embroidery machine is brother 190-d using a memory card, but as i can download free patterns or use my own want to know how.

By reading another persons answer to a different question I have just found a great site for you to look at. It has a list of sections on machine embroidery, and has a section on exactly what you want. Its called digitising step by step. There are also many things that it will clarify for you which you can do with your machine.

How do you get started digitizing free standing lace for machine embroidery?

January 9th, 2012 1 comment

I have a janome machine and want to create my own lace design. I really want to do my own. Does anyone use Embird or some other program? How hard is it to do?

I use the Digitizer10000 software that Janome sells. I know you can do some digitizing with Embird, but I don’t know how.
The steps I take in D10K are:
1. Scan the design (I draw out my designs first)
2. First layer is straight line embroidery, no satin stitch. This keeps the design in place. This is done in color 1.
3. Satin stitch the design over the straight lines. Do this in color 2.
4. Satin stitch again, with a stitch slight wider than before, starting and stopping in different places. Do this in color 3.
5. Finally, satin stitch one more time right over #4 (color3). Do this in color 4.
6. Stitch it out and fine tune as needed.
I use the different colors so I can tell which layer needs adjusting. I have made some where the stitches in the satin lines get closer (tighter) with each layer. For testing purposes, I keep the different colors and stitch out using netting between Solvy. I have found that if my design is weak and needs a lot of help that the netting keeps it all together – very important the first test stitch!
From there, I tweak the design as needed. Once I like how it stitches out, I change all the colors to one so the machine doesn’t stop between layers anymore. I save multiple copies as I work.
Laces can be time consuming to digitize. I have created two small lace pieces but I prefer to purchase the designs.
Good luck!

Again, that program is called Digitizer10000. Sold by Janome dealers. There is a new version, DigitizerPro that has some wonderful features, including the ability to digitize any TrueType font you have on your computer. Cool! And it can digitize photos, too. Still one color, but my local dealer said the programmers are working on color!

Does anyone know of good websites to get free embroidery patterns in the PES format (Brother)?

December 25th, 2011 3 comments

I own a Brother SE270D and just bought PE-Design Basic and am looking for free patterns I can download. Thanks.

There are tons of sites where you can get free PES format designs. Just a few of my favorites are: http://freepes.designsbysick.com/, http://www.amazingembroiderydesigns.com/, http://www.cuteembroidery.com/, and http://www.cuteembroidery.com/.

At each of these sites, you can download a daily free design (either exclusively in PES, or available in PES) as well as vote for which design will be offered the next day. There is also the option of paying a fee and being able to download all the offered designs for a set amount of time (6 months to a year, depending on the site and option you choose).

Likewise, there are many embroidery sites that offer sample designs for you so that you can test their quality before deciding if you wish to purchase from them. I strongly recommend this because there are some REALLY good digitizers out there, and then there are some that are mediocre or even poor (maybe even relying on autodigitizing programs that don’t do a very good job). Here are a couple great ones that I am a paying member of: http://www.artisticthreadworks.com/ and http://www.stitchitcheap.com/.

Another good thing to consider is going to Yahoo!Groups and finding a machine embroidery group or two to join (I’m on more than 85 of them). Lots of them offer freebies in their group files, and you can learn so much from group discussion. Just be aware that some of them have VERY high volume, so know what you can handle. And it is considered bad form to join a group to get the freebies and then leave it immediately. You could be banned from ever joining again if you do that.

WARNING: In case you didn’t already know, collecting free embroidery designs can be addictive. Try to only save the ones that you think you might actually use, not just anything and everything that you come across, or else you will have room for nothing else on your computer! And be sure to create backup files frequently so that you don’t loose all those precious designs should your computer crash someday. I burn cds like they are going out of style.

Futhermore, it is illegal to sell or give away any design that you don’t own the copyright on, so be careful of any of those "popular character" designs you might find. If it’s Disney and a freebie, it is almost certainly not legal. Buying a pattern gives you the right to use it, not to resell it. =]

On Brother’s SE-270D Embroidery, how do you evenly space letters 45-70? Also, how do you center a word?

November 24th, 2011 2 comments

I just bought an embroidery and I figured out how to write a word with the 4 printed fonts but I cannot figure out how to center it onto my fabric? It says to use embroidery sheets. Do I need to use that and what is that?

Also, for the cursive feature on #45-70, is there a way to type in the word on the machine or do I have to eyeball that with each letter? Does the cursive section only have one size?

Lastly, if I’m trying to find a free ballet, hawaiian or a different letter font on the internet to download, do you have an easy way to find it?

i have a brother machine but it is a ult2002d so i can’t specifically answer your question. there are soooooo many yahoo groups dedicated to machine embroidery. i looked up a couple of the for you and there are 2 that are just for your machine. the people on these groups are wonderful and will walk you thru every step of the way. here are the links.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Brother_se-270d/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/brother_Disney_SE-270D_CLUB/

as far as downloading designs from the internet i’ll give you a few sites
http://www.astitchahalf.com/ has a sale every week where she sells 5 different fonts for only $3.00
www.annthegran.com has all kinds of free designs
and my favorite site is
http://www.designsbysick.com/amember/go.php?r=5647&i=l0">Designs by SiCK Embroidery Library
they give away 49 free designs a day and the membership to their site is very reasonable.

these are just a few to get you started. if you have any other questions just e-mail me, i will be more than happy to help.

have fun.
