Anyone know where I can find some websites with free cross stitch embroidery patterns, transfers, or designs?

January 25th, 2012 5 comments

I plan on making gifts this year for Christmas, including some cross stitch emboidery. But I am having trouble finding some free patterns. I do not want the counted cross stitch patterns…just the emboidery patterns with the X’s. Does anyone know any websites to search through in order to find some patterns? I’m not really looking for anything in particular. I’ll just know it when I see it.

Go to www.freepatterns.com. They have all kinds of great patterns. You do have to be a member to download them.

I just got a Brother Computerized Sewing and Embroidery Machine, SE-400?

What are the best sites to download free embroidery graphics from?

Congratulations!

First, create a folder on either the pc’s hard drive, disk or flash drive for storing your downloads or you will have problems trying to locate them as you want to use them. Within the folder, create sub folders as the collection grows for easy access, such as infant, hearts, sports, flowers, etc.

If you decide to store on the hard drive, be sure to back-up on a flash drive by saving each time you add or make changes to the folder. This can be a life saver should the pc crash or otherwise lose all your hard work.

Downloads are usually zipped to save download time. These files have to be opened/extracted/unzipped before they can be used as the embroidery machine will not recognize the format. This is a good time to rename the files for easy recognition. If there is a file extension (.pes) be sure to add it to the rename. Example: yxrose123.pes could be renamed yellowrose.pes

Be sure to download files with a pes format and that are within the size of the machine’s embroidery stitch area.

For example – if the embroidery machine is designed for a 4" x 4" hoop, no matter how much larger a hoop that you may use, the machine is limited to the 4 x 4 and will not stitch out a larger design without editing software to split the design into smaller segments and additional re-hooping and re-positioning of the item being embroidered.

There are many sites for downloading free designs – beware of the foreign sites, especially Russian as they offer designs that are illegal US licensed designs.

If you do a search of free machine embroidery designs you can then choose the sites as you wish – just watch out for the foreign sites offering Disney and other licensed designs.

I use Ann The Gran – some are free for everyone and others are free to members of Ann’s Club, which requires a small membership fee. Membership also includes discounts on supplies and merchandise. http://www.annthegran.com

Embroidery Library as a few freebies, but they have the best overall tips, techniques and tutorials online. http://www.emblibrary.com/EL/elprojects/holder.aspx?page=techniques

http://www.sewforum.com has free designs and a great forum for learning, asking questions and overall information.

Brother has designs that can be downloaded, will be in the correct format and within the 4 x 4 hoop size/stitching area – http://www.brother-usa.com/HomeSewing/GetCreative/free-designs.aspx

Once you have your collection, you will not be able to view the actual design unless you have a software program. The least expensive on that I have found is Embrilliance Thumbnailer, available here – http://www.dzgns.com/shopping_cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1293 this site also has free downloads.

Enjoy and please email me if you have any additional questions.

How do you get started digitizing free standing lace for machine embroidery?

January 9th, 2012 1 comment

I have a janome machine and want to create my own lace design. I really want to do my own. Does anyone use Embird or some other program? How hard is it to do?

I use the Digitizer10000 software that Janome sells. I know you can do some digitizing with Embird, but I don’t know how.
The steps I take in D10K are:
1. Scan the design (I draw out my designs first)
2. First layer is straight line embroidery, no satin stitch. This keeps the design in place. This is done in color 1.
3. Satin stitch the design over the straight lines. Do this in color 2.
4. Satin stitch again, with a stitch slight wider than before, starting and stopping in different places. Do this in color 3.
5. Finally, satin stitch one more time right over #4 (color3). Do this in color 4.
6. Stitch it out and fine tune as needed.
I use the different colors so I can tell which layer needs adjusting. I have made some where the stitches in the satin lines get closer (tighter) with each layer. For testing purposes, I keep the different colors and stitch out using netting between Solvy. I have found that if my design is weak and needs a lot of help that the netting keeps it all together – very important the first test stitch!
From there, I tweak the design as needed. Once I like how it stitches out, I change all the colors to one so the machine doesn’t stop between layers anymore. I save multiple copies as I work.
Laces can be time consuming to digitize. I have created two small lace pieces but I prefer to purchase the designs.
Good luck!

Again, that program is called Digitizer10000. Sold by Janome dealers. There is a new version, DigitizerPro that has some wonderful features, including the ability to digitize any TrueType font you have on your computer. Cool! And it can digitize photos, too. Still one color, but my local dealer said the programmers are working on color!

I had free program that showed embroidery designs on screen and printed them but I lost it, Can U Help Me?

December 28th, 2011 1 comment

I downloaded this program from someone on a Yahoo group and it’s very easy. You just choose the file and it shows all the designs in it and them you can print all the designs and the details of the colors and sizes with it. I can’t remember the name. It’s great for printing out all your designs so you will know where it is. Thanks for help.

maybe??

or ask your Q again but put it into the Crafts category, where more embroiderer people will see it. Leave out "program" from the heading so it doesn’t end up in Computer Software

Where can I find free HAND embroidery designs? Or neat HAND embroidery designs to buy?

December 18th, 2011 8 comments

I want some modern HAND embroidery patterns. Not Veggies with the days of the week!

Why dont you make your own? I have a hard time finding what I like also, and no one knows what I like better than me!

Some small graph paper and a pencil goes a LONG way to creating designs you will love!!

If you cant draw or this idea intimidates you, get a picture or design you like, put the graph paper on top of it and trace it. Then make a pattern for it based on the blocks you drew on.
