Embroidered Portrait by Michael-Birch Pierce, MFA candidate in Fibers at Savannah College of Art and Design

www.michaelbirchpierce.com

This is one in a series of free-motion embroidered portraits. All portraits are done from life, in one sitting, and are completely unplanned. No preliminary drawing or sketching, just an impulsive gesture drawing using the machine. My goal with these pieces is to find life in the machine. I am pushing it to its limits to break away from the tight, restricted, measured stitches that is indicative of machine embroidery. The result is long, loose lines with a hand drawn quality. The process provides an intermediary between me and my drawing, causing me to connect with the surface in a totally new way.

Thanks for viewing everyone! Please take the time to check out the work of my studio mates that you can see in the background. At the beginning you can see the work of Kate De Para – katedepara.blogspot.com and Maggie Horne – www.maggiejayhorne.com At the end, you can see an amazing sculpture by Kristie Carlisle Duncan – www.thefamilychicken.com

Thanks! i haven’t used the BSR but I’d like to see how that affects the process. One of the things I love about doing it now is the irregularity of the stitches. It’s interesting to see how it varies as I pull it through faster on the hair or slow down around the eyes. Keeping it loose and free maintains evidence of the hand, a record of the experience of watching it develop before your eyes.
