I need a recommendation on Paypal shopping cart software, that supports downloads after buying?

December 17th, 2012 1 comment

The shopping cart must be able to accept a Paypal payment, then enable the purchaser to download the file they just purchased.

Specifically, I have digitized embroidery alphabets available. Hobby embroiderers would use them for cool lettering fonts. They can buy them from my web site through Paypal now, but I have to ship them a CD containing the fonts. I think my sales would improve if they could simply download a zip file of the fonts after they pay, but I don’t even begin to know where to look for a shoppng cart package to support that, and I sure can’t program it myself. Any help is appreciated.

osCommerce is a shopping cart system that is open source code that has mods that allow for downloads. Also PayPal is available. Getting the osCommerce setup is tricky and there are some companies that have ones set up with the popular MODS. I was going to do it with my Lunar Pages but I need to get Sercurity certs and I decided not to go to all of this trouble. I might have been better off to subscribe to the Services that have the OsCommerce already with the popular mods.

If you do do this on your own, you will need plenty of PHP programming familarity. It is a good idea to know a little about PHP anyway. If you go with a service that offers you the already customized OS Commerce (http://www.oscdox.com/ is one has MODS configures), you are better off. It is more $$$ then my Lunar pages. My Lunar pages are about $20 a month. If you go it alone, you will need to keep up on Securty problems and be ready to put patches in.

The OSCommerce is one of the less expensive solutions. Other solutions could be very expensive. There is CubeCart that might be easier. You need to buy the downlaod module from a third party. Basic CubeCart is also free & open source. The OSCommerce is much mote robust but harder.

Other cart systems with downloads prob. don’t support PayPal & might be very, very expensive. It is expensive to pay a programmer.

I wish that I recalled the OSCommerce site that had good support and that offered a ready off the shelf OSCommerce with many MODS. Do a search in Google for OSCommerce. You will find more info on this cart system.

Also, there are Embroidery Malls that will sell your designs for you. Just be sure that you can live with their terms. You can sell via Embird if you own Embird software. I have some designs there but got no traffic. Embird is www.embird.com. I have tried ebay but too many sellers and one needs to lower their prices. I have sold via eBay. For eBay you need to email the files to the customer after they pay. At eBay the fees are too high. If you can get one of these carts working, that would be ideal. The cart could be a goal and one could start selling & emailing the designs. Criswell emails her designs to people. Of course she is well known.

With the cart system and downloads, the major problem is that you can be ripped off by buyers who have stolen credit cards. Yet, I would think that such problems that I’ve read about in carts & auto=downloads are in industries such as music that have plenty of crooks available. So far embroidery still is a small industry, yet now we are experiencing too many sellers, selling too cheap & not enough buyers. So, I don’t want to discourage you from the cart System but just be aware of what you are up against.

i need a sewing machine that can be used for freehand embroidery?

December 17th, 2012 2 comments

is there a specific type i should buy, or special needles. Any further info greatly aprecited, thanks.

Embroidery needles are often useful. All you need to do free motion embroidery is have a machine that allows you to drop or cover the feed dogs — the rest is up to you. Having a machine that allows you to do a stitch at a time and stop with needle up or needle down can also be useful, so you may wish to pay special attention to electronic machines (as opposed to mechanical):

Best book on FME that I know of is Robbie and Tony Fanning’s Complete Book of Machine Embroidery, now out of print (but commonly available at libraries). While you’re at it, see if they can get you a copy of "Singer Instructions for Art Embroidery" — reprints are fine — the originals were done on treadle sewing machines.

I can’t find any classes, any suggestions would be welcome. Thank you.

The "classes, lessons" are listed here and I hope that you will find the one that you get the most information from. Please, when you find it, put it in your favorites so you won’t have to hunt for something you can find in the lesson you "took".

Brother Embroidery Machine and PED Basic software Help?

December 15th, 2012 2 comments

How do I connect font characters to spell a word? I want to embroider my daughters name on something using a font I downloaded from the internet. I cannot group the characters together on my machine. Is there any way to do this?
Thank you so much! That is helpful. I wish I could do it with what I have 🙁

I am afraid not. You can combine the letters already built into the machine.

You will need an editing software program to combine the letters or do one at a time.

If doing one at a time is the only option, bring up each letter and send to the card.

Then make a sample by stitching out each letter, noting the size and then determine how far to space each letter. Start by making a cross hair with a pen for each one – this will help you to find the center of each letter after stitching.

Remember, the center for the letters a and y (as examples) are going to differ as will as upper and lower case letters.

You can use the jog feature on the embroidery machine to calculate the perimeter of each letter.

There is a trial of Embird that may be of help as well as a tutorial for lettering at ABC Embroidery (free).

where should I donate or sell a diamond wedding embroidery framed picture of the coronation 60 years ago?

December 15th, 2012 1 comment

I have a beautiful framed picture hand embroidered lovingly by a relation now passed on of the coronation 60 years ago . It is in storage and seems such a waste. There must be someone who would love it on their wall.

This could be very valuable as Queen Elizabeth is celebrating her Diamond Jubilee this year. I would have it appraised by a reputable antique dealer. One that specializes in British history. Start getting appraisals at different dealers until you come across one who knows the worth. You could put it on Ebay or Craig’s list just to see what the highest bid is, but not sell. If you wish to donate, it should be in a historical place, a library or some such setting as it is very valuable I would think. If you don’t want to check out appraisals, before I would donate it, I would save it and pass it down thru the family to someone who would appreciate the value and the time it took for your relation to make it.

Where to find embroidery patterns?

Where can i find free patterns for embroidery by hand.

Michaels has some, although several of these are ribbon embroidery or use templates you have to buy:

http://www.michaels.com/art/online/projectlist?categoryid=31

This site has a few designs.
http://www.berlinembroidery.com/freedesigns.htm

This site might have some stuff, but it’s not working for me right now.

And here’s one jacobean crewel work sample: http://crossstitch.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=crossstitch&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.embroiderersguild.org.uk%2Fstitch%2Fprojects%2Fcrewel%2Fcrewel.html

Another thing you can do is to take a line art design and copy it with a xerox copier, or print it with a laser printer. These both use heat sensitive toner, which can be transferred to fabric just like an iron-on design.

Google image searching on "line art" will get you a good sample of line art images to play with.

Where can I find a personalized easter basket online?

December 13th, 2012 2 comments

I am looking for a basket with a custom embroidered liner in boy colors. I saw the ones at personalizationmall.com and lillianvernon.com. I am looking for something a little more unique.

Pottery Barn Kids has some wicker baskets with gingham liners in boy colors. Monogramming for the liners is an extra cost.

PersonalizedPresents.com also has some very nice looking baskets with liners (Item #1878-00) and the personalization is free up to 8 letters. They ship the same or next day and offer a flat rate shipping charge. You also can pick the liner color, font, and embroidery color.

How to make my own applique fonts for my embroidery Machine?

December 13th, 2012 1 comment

My wife always pay for these applique and I want to know how to make some for her. She has a Husqvarna Viking Designer Topaz 20 and the 5D embroidery extra program.

I have a Topaz 30, new to me. I do not believe that it’s possible without knowing how to write the computer program that would be compatible with the 5D software. There is also likely "licensing" protection for the software by Husqvarna.

I find that many of the patterns for sale are very inexpensive for single patterns. Have you visited: Embroidery Library? Some patterns I’ve purchased for as little as $1. Once I purchased a few items, they began to send me sales items, free patterns etc.

How do I make a basic quilt?

December 13th, 2012 1 comment

I have some silks from color guard that I have already put together. I want to put them on a quilt for someone. It doesn’t have to necessarily have to be a quilt, but maybe a blanket. (I hope that isn’t the same thing to make me sound like an idiot.) Anyways. What is the best way to do this?

A basic quilt is easy. First you need to decide if you are going to make a lap, twin, full size. Then you need to buy material for the backing and a package of batting. Now when you say you have put the silks together-does that mean you have sewn them or just laid them out in an design. If you have already sewn them together you will need to square up the top. Then how about a border in a contrasting color. You would need to make strips about 4 1/2 inches wide by the length of the top(to sew on the sides of the top. then strips the width of the top(to sew on the top and bottom). Once you have done this you are ready to make the quilt. You would now put the material for the back down first, then on top of that put the batting and then lay the top on the batting. That is called a sandwich. the quilting is easy, too. If you have a machine you would want to use your free motion foot. I would then change my needle and put a size 10 or 11 embroidery needle in to sew with (this will not break the threads in the quilt material). For your quilt stitch use a meandering stitch. When done with this you would just turn the raw edges under and stitch all around the quilt and you are done.If you do not have a machine that you can quilt on then do it by hand. Get a large hoop and Do the same meandering stitch and finish it the same way. It will take a little longer to do but it is easy. Make sure to use quilting thread for machine or hand quilting thread. Lastly, if you have not decided on a design for the top of your quilt I would suggest that you make a crazy quilt with the silks. That would be cutting different shapes and sizes then sewing them together. You could then use fancy embroidery stitches to quilt with.
