Making embroidery patterns for a sewing machine?

November 23rd, 2012 2 comments

Have a new Huskvarna SE sewing/embroidery machine. I would like to make patterns for it (stitch files is what the store calls them) so I can have my own cust. designs. How do I get started?

If you are referring to embroidery and not sewing, you will need digitizing software for machine embroidery.

Most of the software programs do auto digitizing which requires you to use clip art or your own designs in a format such as jpg. Even then, you may have to do some manual editing.

There are a few products that you can download for a trial – Designer’s Gallery (BabyLock) and Buzz Tools are a couple brands.

All digitizing software will save designs in the format of all embroidery machines. You do not need to purchase the brand offered by the same company as your EM.

There is another software – Stitch Era, that is free to download. It is also complex and not that easy to learn. The manual is over 200 pages and I have yet to get through it.

I use PE Design for digitizing and Designer’s Gallery for editing. PE was a gift and DG came with my BabyLock.

how much my embroidery machine is worth?

its a Barudan one head sample machine with the ability to do names, it has a keyboard attaches and 3 fonts.

Try and post it on ValueJockey.com. It is free and a great place to find out the value of just about everything. Include a picture in the listing, it helps a lot.

Alternative stabilizers for machine embroidery?

November 23rd, 2012 7 comments

I’ve heard of a few alternatives to embroidery stabilizer… dryer sheets, freezer paper, even "sewer cloth" that plumbers use. Any others?

i would recommend you join a few yahoo groups. they discuss things like this all the time. some of the alternatives work and work well, other work and can damage your machine. the people on the yahoo groups are full of so much useful knowledge and they allow us to learn from their mistakes.
here are just a few. if you want more either do a search in yahoo groups or contact me thru my profile and i’d be happy to help.

those should get you started. i also would like to share my favorite embroidery site with you. they give away 49 free designs a day and the memberships to their site are very reasonable and they run sales frequently.

What is a good embroidery machine for personal and small business use?

November 23rd, 2012 2 comments

We ahve a small business and I want to personalize my kids’ shirts. What is a auitable model for this type of use?

You should look for a machine that has (at the very lease) a stitching (hoop) area of 5 x 7, or you will be limited to designs no larger than 4 x 4.

Also important is Internet connectivity. UBS port B is direct connection via a cable that comes with the machine and USB port A is a removable flash stick/drive. A is the most convenient, the PC needs to be near the embroidery machine to use the port B cable.

The less expensive machines use machine embroidery reader boxes and rewritable cards only – these are almost obsolete.

Bernina and Husqvarna are the most expensive and are proprietary when is comes to accessories (like additional UBS sticks).

Brother and Babylock are the same family of machines, the most user friendly and compatible with software, including the USB sticks.

Singer – has had an iffy reputation for several years.

They all are basically the same as far as functions. They get more expensive as the luxury features are added on.

You should be able to get an embroidery machine that has the larger stitching area and USB connectivity for around $1,000, or less.

You can buy new or a dealer may have a gently used one that has been traded up for one of the luxury models.

Do buy from a dealer for the support you may need.

Visit as many dealers as you can, watch the demos and then try the machines.

Buy the brand you like best from the dealer you like best.

Don’t buy any software from a dealer until you have used the machine and are comfortable with what you can do with additional software – there are companies that have free trials that you can download and test.

Ideas on how to transfer images onto fabric for an eco friendly project?

November 23rd, 2012 1 comment

As part of eco-schools we need to transfer images onto white cotton. I was just wondering if anyone had any new ideas. Eco-friendly ideas would also be excellent. The images might end up being images the kids have drawn, photos and also the fairtrade logo will be on it. These are the ideas I have come up with so far. The pupils are from 11-16.
Embroidery machine,
Applique,
Use image maker,
Fabric Paints
Printing (lino/ stencil etc..)
Batik

Any other ideas???

hand embroidery
free motion embroidery
beading
rust transfer "dyeing"
mudcloth designs
flower or leaf pounding
direct dye methods on pre-mordanted fabrics
altered fabric, e.g., cutwork

remember that the "greenest" methods are usually the most human energy intensive. The less "stuff" needed to accomplish the goal, the less environmental impact. Also remember that white cotton is not exactly environmentally friendly in its own right.

What can I do with extra scrapbook paper and embroidery floss?

November 23rd, 2012 5 comments

I have lots of scrapbook paper but i am out of ideas of things to do with them. I need some good cute ideas more than origami though. And instructions would be nice too 🙂
I also have lots of embroidery floss too, any ideas of what i could do with that too…need instructions for those too 🙂

thanks for the help

here are a few ideas where you can use both together.

you could make greeting cards & bookmarks & dust-covers for books.
and use the floss to decorate.
you could also make beautiful filigree patterns with the floss on the card. just punch tiny holes [with thick needle] all along the border of your design. then using floss, weave it through these holes to get a beautiful filigree pattern. if you make a simple circle, you can insert a photo or picture within, & the filigree border will act as a frame.

or just glue the floss on the card paper to make colorful designs/ patterns or landscapes. for texture, [eg. for grass] you could apply glue to the designated area & cut & drop tiny pieces of green floss over it. press gently with cloth & leave to dry.

make a "paper quilt" to use as place mats, wall decoration, table-runner, coasters, etc. Here, make ‘blocks’ out of paper just as you would with fabric. decorate each block with floss or any other material. then glue all the blocks together on a large sheet. also use floss for borders, etc. Finally, get it laminated or framed for durability, utility, longevity.

make Xmas tree decorations/ornaments using both materials. plenty of sites & ideas on the web.
